Arrest made in Maryland Heights officer shooting

Evan Lockhart

CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) - A 19-year-old St. Louis man who wasn’t even on the investigators’ radar, is now charged with shooting Maryland Heights Police Detective Joe Eagan in the face two weeks ago.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch says Evan Lockhart was arrested on a peace disturbance charge in the city Friday night.

McCulloch says investigators followed his trail to the December 18th shooting of Eagan, who was working surveillance in an unmarked car at Jennings Station Road and I-70, “From my understanding it had nothing to do with why Detective Eagan was there in the first place. It was just a crime of opportunity on his part.”

St. Louis Police say that three hours before the shooting, Lockhart carjacked a man at gunpoint on Humphrey.

He’s being held without bond in St. Louis County. His bond in the city is set at one million dollars.

Sgt. Eagan is said to be doing as well as can be expected, but McCulloch says he will require several more surgeries.
